- Description
- Cortistatin is a brain-specific peptide which is highly homologous to somatostatin. However, it is a product of a gene different from the somatostatin gene. While somatostatin is widely distributed in the brain, cortistatin is localized mainly in the cerebrocortex and in the hippocampus. Intracerebroventricular administration of cortistatin to rats prompts distinct increases of non-REM sleep. Obviously, the effects of cortistatin and somatostatin (see above) on sleep EEG are opposite.
