Target
This gene encodes a member of the insulin-like hormone superfamily. The encoded protein is mainly produced in gonadal tissues. Studies of the mouse counterpart suggest that this gene may be involved in the development of urogenital tract and female fertil
Description
INSL3 was first identified as a major product of testicular Leydig cells and has been shown to be expressed in all species this far examined. During development INSL3 produced by fetal Leydig cells plays a role in development of the gabernacular ligament and the subsequent abdominal migration or descent of the testes. In men circulating INSL3 increases through puberty reaching a peak in early adulthood followed by a gradual decline with aging. The role of INSL3 in the adult testes is not clear however it is thought to impact male germ cell survival.
