Description
Neuromedin S is a 36-amino acid neuropeptide found in the brain of humans and other mammals. It is produced in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus and is related to neuromedin U. It is thought to be involved in regulation of circadian rhythm and also has appetite suppressant effects, as well as regulating the release of several other peptide hormones including vasopressin, luteinizing hormone, and oxytocin. NMS: Implicated in the regulation of circadian rhythms through autocrine and/or paracrine actions. Belongs to the NmU family. This gene encodes a member of the neuromedin family of neuropeptides. The encoded protein is a precursor that is proteolytically processed to generate a biologically active neuropeptide that plays a role in the regulation of circadian rhythm, anorexigenic action, antidiuretic action, cardiovascular function and stimulation of oxytocin and vasopressin release.
